Fastest man made thing ever is? Yup, a manhole cover During the 1957 Operation Plumbbob nuclear test, a 900-kilogram (2,000 lb) iron lid, often referred to as a manhole cover, was placed over a borehole to contain the blast. Despite predictions that it wouldn't work, the explosion sent the lid straight up the test shaft, launching it into the atmosphere at an incredibly high speed. Some sources suggest that the manhole cover was moving at over 37 miles per second, or 130,000 mph. While some theorize it might have reached space, the most likely scenario is that it burned up in the atmosphere
