A murder hole is a defensive opening in the ceiling of a castle gateway or passageway, allowing defenders to drop rocks, arrows, boiling water, sand, or quicklime on attackers trapped below, making it a lethal trap for invaders trying to breach the entrance. These openings were part of a fortification's design, often found in machicolations, to exploit the weakest point—the gatehouse—and were crucial for repelling assaults.
